Chalk the Walk
Write messages rooted in support and awareness on sidewalks in the community!
Sidewalks and entryways are your canvas for advocacy during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. You only need some chalk and some inspiration. Chalk the walk is a great way for schools, faith groups, and small businesses to participate.

What should I write?
Raising awareness is an essential part of working to end the cycle of abuse. Imagine being told no one will believe you. That you’re unworthy of better. Being gaslighted and wondering if you’re to blame. What messages would matter to you? Here are a few suggestions:
- Speak out to end domestic violence.
- You are beautiful and worthy.
- Believe survivors of abuse.
- Your safety matters.
- Love should be safe.
- Fear is not love.
- Rooted in support for survivors.
- Know the signs of domestic violence.
- Support takes root here.
Remember to include our 24-hour hotline with your messages. That number is 800-544-2022. You can also use hashtags like #ENDDV #SupportSurvivors #DVAM and #ChalkTheWalk.
What are some good places to chalk?
Think about places and spaces that get a lot of foot traffic.
Maybe you chalk sidewalks and steps near the entrance to your workplace, community center, or faith space. Downtown business districts, paved walkways at the park, and your own driveway or neighborhood sidewalks are good places.
How should I prepare?
Although sidewalk chalk is temporary, it’s always a good idea to ask permission before chalking business or public property. And don’t forget to take photos of your chalk art for social media. Tag us in your posts — we want to celebrate your efforts!
Do you need some chalk to make it happen? Send a note to Hallie, our community engagement specialist to request a Chalk the Walk box.
