    History of Handmade by Survivors

Instagram

This reflection and these photos come from Ryan, o This reflection and these photos come from Ryan, our nature-based healing lead, and are from a recent staff email we wanted to share beyond our inboxes.

❄️❄️❄️

Last week I noticed how several inches of snow and ice fell and stayed and (at least temporarily) changed things for so many of us. Fayette County Public Schools had to cancel the entire week for in-person instruction. Roads were impassable for part of the week. We were all inconvenienced.

But when I looked out the dining room windows and saw the clear blue sky, and the snow reflecting the unobstructed sun, and our space filling up with sunlight, I also got to notice that nature is not at all inconvenienced.

Trees remain dormant. They were prepared for something like this. The flower stalks in the garden are unbothered. They stand where they grew, holding ice, reflecting the light as if they were lit from within. The blanket of snow covering the farm, the house, even the road for now, is a visual challenge to my sensibilities.

Where I expected ground, all I see is a frozen landscape. It is like an ocean swell too cold to roll any further, brilliant in the sunlight.

I did have things planned, and the things I planned just could not happen. But I did pause long enough to receive the winter's gift, this interruption, and this cold clarity. Then I wrapped it up in an email so I could share it with you.

If you are interested in volunteering, we would love your support! We are especially in need of volunteers at the Kroger locations in Lawrenceburg, Versailles, and Nicholasville. It’s a great opportunity for groups to volunteer!

Each year shoppers donate enough non-perishable goods to stock the pantry of our emergency shelter for the year. Organized by @britainybeshear and @zerovkentucky, Shop & Share supports survivors of intimate partner abuse and emergency shelters across the state. Every item collected at Kroger stores in our 17-county service area will help survivors we serve.
Shop & Share is back on Saturday, February 7 and w Shop & Share is back on Saturday, February 7 and we need your help! 🛒💜

It's a one-day donation drive at grocery stores across Kentucky to support survivors of intimate partner abuse. Shoppers can “shop” for what they need and “share” a few items with their local domestic violence shelter. Enough non-perishable goods are collected on this day to stock our shelter’s pantry for almost a year!

Over 200 volunteers are needed and here are the ways you can help:

🟣 Distributing our needs list at one of the 20+ Kroger locations across our 17 counties.

🟣 Delivering donated goods from stores outside of Lexington to the shelter, especially if you drive a truck, van, or big SUV.

🟣 Receiving, sorting, and stocking donations at the emergency shelter.
