History of Handmade by Survivors

“It’s not just about the product. It’s very much about the person that put their creativity and their heart into the product.”

Every soap, tin of bath salts, lip balm, and candle is from a survivor’s creativity, care, and journey toward healing. Bekah, a family advocate and the staff member who makes products with survivors, shares this history of Handmade by Survivors.

Product Making History

Bekah has always loved art, and years ago, she began leading our crafting groups.

“I really like doing activities that involve self-care, particularly for adults. Adult women don’t often take time to take care of themselves,” she says.  “And in an abusive relationship, are discouraged from taking care of themselves. I really believe in the idea of giving them a safe space to tap into creativity.”

Early product-making focused on lip balm, homemade lotions, and salve because they’re easy products to make.

“We would go into the kitchen and grab a microwave and take it into the art room. We bought a little hot plate and we would just do an impromptu craft group and teach ladies how to make things for themselves.”

Survivor Involvement

“Throughout the whole process, survivors helped along the way. Every product we’ve made has a story connected to it. It’s not really about the product, it’s about the individual that came up with the product.”

“We would play word games in our craft group with whatever scent we were using. I would have participants choose an essential oil or a flower or an herb that they were really drawn to,” explains Bekah. “They would share why they were drawn to it. From there we would research and figure out what notes went well together within that scent.”

Participants created Soothing Serenity, one of our very first soaps, from start to finish. Most recently, the Benevolence cold-process soap also was imagined and formulated by a participant.

“She happened to pick up an essential oil that I was using for a group activity the following day and fell in love with the scent. We came up with a blend and decided to add an extra soap that we weren’t even planning to do.”

The Heart of Our Products

“The whole purpose of what we do is about the journey for the individual working on the product. Our end goal is to give them a safe space to tap into skills that they already have and to give them a safe place to tap into something that might give them some self-care down the road. Something to be proud about.”

Every Handmade by Survivors purchase is about the person that put their creativity and their heart into the product.

“I very much went into this with the hope of creating a space for economic justice for women that have not had those opportunities. The women I work with have skills that they just don’t tap into because they haven’t had the encouragement, or the time, or don’t realize they have the skills.”

Over the years, many ladies have gone on to open their own online shops or make their own products and sell to small businesses.

Bekah’s Favorite Product

“I love anything Awaken Joy. I love that peppermint scent. It reminds me of my grandmother, so it just takes me to a happy place.”

Heart & Craft

“We are all handmade, we are not meant to be perfect, we are just meant to try to be our best selves possible.”

Every product from our farm tells a story and is crafted with care by survivors reclaiming their lives.

“I know whoever purchases our products will enjoy them as much as I’m liking being a part of making them.”

What began as simple crafts made in microwaves at the shelter has grown to be a line of handmade products enjoyed by supporters across the nation.

Bekah, an advocate with focus on making products, explains, “Women often neglect self-care, especially in abusive relationships where it’s discouraged. Our crafting sessions offer a safe space to rediscover and nurture creativity.”

The first soaps created during the early years—Fresh Start, Soothing Serenity, Sweet Harmony, and Awaken Joy—are still made today. Soothing Serenity was formulated by two women who loved the scent of rosemary.

“Survivors help every step of the way. Each product is linked to someone’s story. It’s not just about the product, but the person behind it,” Bekah says.

Your purchase of Handmade by Survivors products supports creativity and collaboration to foster healing after abuse. And every item smells so good! They also make wonderful holiday gifts for friends near and far. Consider a Hope Box of handmade products for your corporate gift-giving this season.

Handmade Experiences

“I know whoever purchases our products will enjoy them as much as I’m liking being a part of making them.”

These words were written by a survivor who participated in handmade programming on the farm that surrounds our emergency shelter. The process of making products encourages healing and economic opportunity in a safe and caring environment.

“It was a lifeline,” shares Jewell. She received a weekly stipend while working to develop, make, package, and label handmade products. “This program gave me some kind of purpose, or drive, or reason to get up. There were a lot of days that I contemplated not coming and realized this is where I needed to be.”

Another survivor who prefers to remain anoymous shares how the process is helping her: “I’m making new friends and getting outside of my comfort zone—and really starting to enjoy myself again.”

Your purchase of Handmade by Survivors products makes these stories possible. Every product we make is natural, nourishing, and creates hope for brighter tomorrows.

“I feel peaceful and my mind feels clear,” shares LaTonya, who helped develop, test, and make the Benevolence variety of cold-process soap. She describes the experience as very therapeutic.

“Whatever the task may be, I feel empowered to take on that task, and that is so uplifting for me.”

Handmade by Survivors Product Reflections 💜

“My smiles are so much brighter. I have found a way to use my skills in something I so much enjoy doing!”

The following reflections were written by survivors who have helped make our Handmade by Survivors products. They’ve given us permission to share these stories with you.

By D

I really enjoyed this opportunity to learn how to make candles, soap, and bath salts! It gave me a chance to bond with some of my fellow survivors in such a way that was very valuable to me both spiritually and humanly! It helped me tremendously. Not only did I make life-long bonds, I also had fun doing it! It seems like my 8 weeks flew by. I really, truly hate to see it come to an end.

I so believe in GreenHouse17 and all the products we made. I know they were all made with love and careful thought and planning. They are a proud group of women who have seen some trauma in our lives! I looked forward to each day as to what we were gonna make! I loved it all, except wiping off the bottoms of the candles! 😊

I surely hope the next crew gets as much enjoyment out of it as I did! I enjoyed everything about it! It relaxed me, we laughed, joked, played, ate ice cream & cookies, listened to the radio, & also drank numerous pots of coffee! I wouldn’t change a thing—Loved it all!

By A

My smiles are so much brighter, I have found a way to use my skills in something I so much enjoy doing! Making soap and doing different things with my new family that I know God has blessed me to have in my life is wonderful. I find it’s very easy to talk with the ladies I work with.

To sit back and see what I’m able to do with the things I have made is so awesome, plus the smiles I receive when others see it. I have come to see that I’m able to do so many different things and will be able to put on my resume – like doing stock inventory, as well as learning ways to make wonderful handmade stuff.

I never even thought about what flowers could do to make oils, soap, candles, lip balm… so many different colors and so many different smells. It’s good for me because I don’t open up – or should I say I used to not! 😊

But the fear of not being good enough or not being accepted gets less and less. I smile more and I look forward to coming and hanging out with everyone.

I know whoever purchases our products will enjoy them as much as I’m liking being a part of making them.

By R

I didn’t realize how important it could be in one’s life when it comes to going about the things you do – working, helping others, or just hanging out. How we do it can be helpful in one’s recovery for the trauma. I have endured so many years.

In this I have begun to learn how to pick up a new skill, spent sober & clean fun time with others, laughed, and enjoyed the wonderful world of crafting. I never realized that the things I’ve taken for granted in my everyday life could be used to help the body. Plus, it smells great.

I wish I could have started earlier, but I feel very blessed to be given a chance to join in and learn more. I look forward to learning how to make other things and seeing how this will benefit GreenHouse17.

Not only has doing this opened a new door, but it also has given me the pleasure of wanting to write how I feel about things down on paper.

Handmade by Survivors: Cold Process Soap Making

Your purchase of our Handmade by Survivors products will help victims of intimate partner violence as they establish safety, heal from the physical and emotional wounds of abuse, and grow strong as survivors.

Five of our new soaps we are launching this season are cold processed, so we thought it’d be great to share with y’all some of the benefits that come with this process. Cold processed soaps are considered one of the most traditional forms of soap making. Due to not using high temperatures to cure, this process is better for more natural and raw ingredients. Cold processed soaps are also best for optimal moisturization and allow us to be a bit more creative with the soap aesthetic and our shaping techniques.

The soaps made a lot of difference. They’re all different and all beautiful. It doesn’t seem like any two are the same. And there’s a lot like the survivors, women and men of domestic violence. We all are similar in some kind of form, but we all have our differences to be celebrated.. – Jewell

5 Benefits of Cold Process Soap:

1. The Creamy Feel

Cold process soap made with all-natural ingredients like plant oils and butters creates a creamy lather for deep moisturization. Unlike other soap types, cold process versions penetrate deep into into the skin to help minimize dry itchy skin.

2. Powerfully Natural

The benefits of natural soap making ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter and olive oil can be lost through the heating process in hot process soap techniques; the cold process method ensures these natural ingredients are better preserved.

3. Intensive Scent

Cold process soaps are often fragranced with natural essential oils, like lavender and jasmine, or fragrance oils like chocolate or apple. Because cold process soap takes a number of weeks to fully cure, the scent intensifies over time.

4. Luxurious Lather

Unlike hot process soap, alternatives made through the cold process method can be skilfully whipped for the lightest touch, even floating on water! Cold process soap has the ability to create incredible lather to allow a truly luxurious bathing sensation.

5. Creatively Colorful

Cold process soap making techniques include a level of artistry, with many soaps decorated with swirls, layers of color and all sorts of interesting designs. Some are mixed with natural ingredients for texture while others have a top layer of herbs for an artistic final touch.
