Violence is Never Funny
Recent commercials from Callaway, Good Good Golf, and Domino’s Pizza have caused controversy and made headlines in the past few weeks.
Callaway & Good Good Golf
The video ad promoting new golf clubs showed Good Good co-founder Garrett Clark running up to golfer Alexis Miestowski as she tried to reach for his club. He angrily shoves her to the ground and she looks terrified. The video continues with the co-founder aggressively shoving others. It ends with text reading “Consider Yourself Warned.”
The ad was quickly met with backlash, was pulled from social media, and the companies issued apologies. Good Good CEO Matt Kendrick said in a statement on LinkedIn that the ad was “intended to parody a scene from the movie Obsession.” Kendrick has now stepped down as CEO, and Callaway has ended its partnership with Good Good.
Domino’s Pizza
Domino’s released several commercials depicting family violence. The children and mother are upset by the father’s pizza order and begin attacking him, which ends in him being thrown out the window, glass shattering.
The videos appear to have been removed, but they have not publicly addressed the backlash.
Violence is never funny.
Intimate partner violence results in nearly 1,300 deaths and more than two million injuries in the United States each year.
The National Network to End Domestic Violence wrote in a social media post:
For the second time this week, we’re sharing an important reminder that domestic violence isn’t funny. It’s not a clever marketing technique. It’s not a joke used to sell products.
Domestic violence is a crisis impacting millions of people across our country — our friends, family members, colleagues, neighbors, community members, and even ourselves. Victims and survivors are paying attention to media portrayals of their pain, always.
We’re grateful to our community members who have spoken out and generously donated to NNEDV (and to our partners) in response to the recent Callaway, Good Good Golf, and Domino’s ads that normalize violence.
